Mechanism of action

Collagen wound pads have a positive effect on all three phases of wound healing

Inflammatory phase

Its porous structure means collagen wound pad has strong capillary action, causing aggressive exudates, pro-inflammatory cytokines, free radicals and proteases to leave the wound. The dressing joins together with the wound exudates to form a gel, producing a moist wound environment.

Furthermore, when the wound dressing is changed every day, they lower the pH value in the wound, cutting the risk of secondary bacterial coloisation.

Proliferative/ granulation phase

Increased fibroblast migration promotes the formation of natural collagen.

Remodelling/ epithelialisation phase

At the same time, proliferation and migration of the upper skin cells (epithelial cells) are accelerated, making the wound close faster.
